[Image taken 14.5.23] Burton Stone Lane, York. After seeing width restrictions on cycle routes earlier today (see: #193941, #193950) I caught up with a person riding a recumbent trike. I asked her the dimensions of her rig. She was riding an Azub T-Tris with a 26 inch rear wheel (azub.eu/recumbent-bikes-and-trikes/trikes/26-wheels/t-tris/). That page gives the width as 83.5cm and the length as between 186cm and 2m 11cm. The height is 71.5cm – 84cm. I explained why I was asking. We talked about the obstructions at Bootham Stray/Alder Way/ New Earswick (see: #173450 and #173447). She asked me if I knew the barrier on the other wide of Bootham Stray, near Burton Green School. She said she couldn't get through here in her wheelchair - though she used to be able to do so when the barrier was a different design. I didn't know the obstacle she described so she showed me on a map. It was a dry evening so I overshot my destination to look for the site. I found it and measured it. The first measurement - 98cm - is the maximum width at the bottom of the Aframe. The second, 59cm, is the maximum width between the narrowest part of the 'clamps' you have to pass through. Then I tried it for myself... #193965, #193966, #193967.

The person who alerted me to this barrier later provided further details:

On a recumbent handcycle trike...

"“I have a safety mirror fixed in the only available & useable place on the T-Tris [azub.eu/recumbent-bikes-and-trikes/trikes/26-wheels/t-tris/], which increases its width at handlebar height. Turning the wheels further increases the width, so barriers need to account for this.

There are also stinging nettles which narrow the useable width of the barrier all summer, including now. As a result it is extremely difficult to get the T-Tris through, but I can just do it with some help from someone else.

In a wheelchair...

However, even with my wheelchair set at minimum height, in my electric wheelchair the joystick won’t fit under the narrow bit of the barrier and its armrests + joystick are too wide to fit between the narrow bit.

If they removed the weird upper bit of the barrier it would be do-able for both trike & wheelchair.”
