[Later images/More info and links: #183742] [Image taken 20.5.22] B&Q, Clifton Moor, York. Standard-setting cycle parking provision installed May 2022. (Compare with ‘before’: #175799.) The racks are the Sheffield design. They are close to the entrance, covered and are protected by the bollards from passing vehicles, or pedestrians pushing trolleys. The bollards are sufficiently far back that they protect someone reversing a cycle out (compare with: #177346) but also shield a longer ‘York’ cycle (for example: #174749, #174708) or a cycle with a trailer (see: #184752, #184753). The supports are 128cm apart (see: #182711), and have plenty of space to roll in (see: #182713). It needs signage to it: a) you first see wheelbenders (still in situ) and might think that that's the provision; b) it's the far side of the main entrance. It also needs signage to tell people it's not a trolley park: we had to move two trolleys to be able to use it. I would also like to know about lighting. Can you see to load up and locate the key in your lock after dark? This was my third try at getting practical, accessible provision here. I knew it could be done: I've been a customer at and therefore used the covered racks at the B&Q on Newmarket Road, Cambridge in 2007: #178871. I'd got Sheffields installed at the Old Kent Road, London branch in 2009: #178868. This time around B&Q HQ responded to my emails. It also took up my suggestion to involve the local authority which may have contributed to the practicality and high standard of the outcome. There are few examples of 'best practice' for cycle parking but this is stellar. More images this B&Q provision today: #182712, #182714 and before: #175799.
