[Image taken 6.5.21] Marygate car park, York. A very steep slope leads to/from Scarborough Bridge. To get up a slope on a cycle you need a runup and to be positioned correctly. Wider, longer cycles (see: #165610), and those with trailers (see: #164845, #164543), need larger turning circles. This location does not provide sufficient space. It is clear in this image the corner is blind on this side for all users: coming down and for those wanting to go up. The wall in the background (entrance close to the blue signage) is part of a more gentle slope with serpentines. The low wall in the background has a (flood)gate (open in this image) - the gap to the right - that leads to the river with a plastic 'tray' to mitigate the step for people in wheelchairs, wheeling cycles and scooters, etc. Nearby is a flight of steps to/from the bridge. In short, in addition to the people using the near steep slope, many people (on foot, in wheelchairs, in mobility scooters, with walking aids, who can see well, who have limited sight, who are on cycles, who are scooting, moving around for leisure, for their mental and physical health, to get to/from school, to commute) want to pass the bottom of this slope without using it. (See also: #168583.) And safely. However the space is no wider here (width see: #168004) and there is no formal bypass option. (See: #168561.) City of York Council seem uninterested or uncomprehending of the need and the hazards - conflict, collision. Those who know the risks and who do not want to cause or add to the congestion are back to using the car park. Negating the reason for the providing and widening a protected route through the car park. All images today: #168548 and links.
