[Image taken 18.4.21] Clifton Moor Gate, near Tesco petrol station, York. At its widest the tarmac measures 243cm (actual width). But at its narrowest (between the upstands) it’s 218cm (actual width). Then you take off 25cm or 50cm each end in recognition you don’t get that close to a railing/pole. That makes the max usable space 168cm or 118cm: for people cycling across, walking as family/social groups, pushchairs, and passing other users in the opposite direction.
